Plug-in solar is a small, purpose-designed solar system that supplies electricity to your home through an approved plug connection. It reduces the electricity you need to buy while it is generating.
The four parts of the system
Solar panels turn daylight into direct-current (DC) electricity. A microinverter converts it to alternating current (AC), the kind used by your home. The supplied lead links the complete device to a suitable socket, and its mounting system secures the panels.
These parts need to work as a tested, documented system. A panel, an online microinverter and a cable with a plug do not automatically make a compliant UK kit.
It contributes to the home’s demand
The electricity is shared through the home’s electrical installation. It is not reserved for the appliance nearest the socket. If your home is using more than the panels generate, the grid supplies the remainder.
For example, a home using 500W while the system generates 300W would draw roughly 200W from the grid, ignoring small losses. A kettle or oven can need much more than a small solar system supplies. This is useful background generation, not a whole-home power source.
Watts are not an annual saving
Watts (W) describe power at a moment in time. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy over time. A device supplying 800W for an hour produces 0.8kWh; it will not do that every daylight hour. Weather, direction, shading and season change output.
The current route limits rated AC output to 800W, with apparent power also limited to 800VA. The panel rating can differ from the inverter’s output rating.
Unused electricity and batteries
Surplus can flow to the grid. Do not include export income in your budget unless your supplier has confirmed an eligible arrangement for the exact setup.
The current specification excludes plug-in batteries and solar devices integrated with battery systems. You cannot assume a battery-equipped European kit qualifies.

Does it work during a power cut?
A grid-following microinverter disconnects when the grid is lost. Do not treat a standard plug-in kit as backup power.
Will it work in winter?
It can generate in daylight throughout the year, but winter output is generally lower. Annual savings hide that seasonal variation.
